I’ve been in full-time ministry for the past 30 years. I’ve led in many environments: parishes; as an executive with Catholic Christian Outreach (www.cco.ca); as Director of an Archdiocesan Development Office and currently; as the Archbishop’s Delegate of Development and Ministries for the Archdiocese of Vancouver.
I provide leadership to the Development Office and Ministry Offices. The RCAV Development Office raises approximately $14M annually through a comprehensive fundraising system that includes an Annual Appeal, Planned Giving, Security Gifts, Endowments, DAF’s and Gifts-in-Kind. Our Ministry Offices run 63 programs, projects, events and digital initiatives. Check out: www.beholdvancouver.org and www.weareproclaim.com.
I have a MA Leadership from Royal Roads University & spent many years in less formal study prior to grad school. For the past several years I have been coaching and consulting with business and Church leaders. In addition to my “day-job” I am currently working with Pastoral leaders and their leadership teams who are passionate about building aligned teams moving away from a Christendom approach to their ministry and moving toward apostolic mission.
My son, Jacob, and I have launched a shared initiative called Life Compass. This new ministry is dedicated to helping men become who God designed them to be and bring their greatest contribution to the world – in their family, work and relationships.
I created this blog as an encouraging resource for leaders that are building organizations, ministries and parishes in pursuit of the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20). The new evangelization is the most important mission in the world, it is where leadership matters most.
Personal
According to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) I am an ENTJ which means I’m hard-wired in the following ways:
- I am a systems thinker.
- I enjoy the deep work of creative and critical thinking.
- I am an analyst and advisor.
- I tend to search for underlying problems and discern practical solutions – sometimes unsolicited!
- My passion for teaching leadership is second to my passion for learning leadership.
- I love making forward progress and can’t stand the thought of being stuck – yuck!
- I am a coach at heart and I’m passionate about seeing others thrive.
- I am pro-leader. My content is meant to be inspiring and encouraging, not corrective.
- I am usually around people, but deeply require solitude and silence to restore my soul and re-charge my energies.
- My most favourite place in the world is anywhere with my bride.
My Values
- Trust – Trust is the one thing in relationships that changes everything in relationships.
- Learning – When leaders stop learning, they stop leading. Period.
- Service – Service is essential to leadership; either you are a servant leader or no leader at all.
- Simplicity – Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, especially in leadership and organizational development.
- Integrated Life – Great leaders are ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things and extraordinary people living very ordinary lives.
- Human Dignity – No individual is merely the sum of their strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures. They are the sum of the Heavenly Father’s love for them, infused with an incredible dignity and capable of profound greatness (Saint John Paul II, WYD 2002).
“Values are like glue, they hold everything together.” Dr. John C. Maxwell
My Family
Andrea and I have been dating, engaged or married for over 30 years. We were high school sweethearts and now have eight wonderful kids with a lot of life lived in between (and the sacrament of marriage)! At times it feels like we are raising two families, the “older ones” and the “younger ones” – can anybody relate?
Our kids are active in elite sports which, despite the challenge of managing so many schedules and commitments, has been an incredible blessing to our family. Their involvement has given us many opportunities to share our lives and faith with families we have come to know and love. This is one heck of a good ride.
We have known Reanne since she was in diapers and proudly welcomed her into our family when she married our oldest, Jacob. Now we have a beautiful granddaughter, Gloria Therese, born July 13th 2019.
“There are many kinds of success worth having. It is exceedingly interesting and attractive to be a successful business man, or a successful lawyer or doctor; or a writer, or a President, or the colonel of a regiment, or to kill grizzly bears and lions. But a strong marriage and a household of children certainly makes all other forms of success and achievement lose their importance by comparison.”
– Theodore Roosevelt
